Looking specifically for James Johnson, "planter", the father of Sarah Frances Johnson who married Joseph Carter Clarke in 1859 in St Joseph. At the time of her marriage she was 26 [born abt 1833] & living in Crab Hole [St Elizabeth Village]. Her father, James, was not necessarily alive at the time of her marriage, nor even from these parishes.

Yikes, i know your post was from 2006, but did you know if Joseph Carter had ever been to the Canal or worked on the Canal or was there for any reason?

I don't know if this information is of any help to you, but while doing my family research I came across this information when I visited the St. Thomas parish church cemetery in Barbados. There was a grave with these names on the tombstone
William Thomas Johnson 1846-1934, Joseph Edward Clarke 1861-1947, Marion G Clarke1882-1969,
Joseph Alphonso Clarke 1913-1988, his wife Sheila Joyce Clarke 1931-1993
Sydney Fitzgerald Clarke 1915-1990

By the way, my paternal grandmother's maiden name was Rosalie Johnson, She was born in 1879 in Rock Hall, St. Thomas, Barbados. Her father's name was John Henry Johnson, and he was a mason.
