YOUNG - Jamaica

Postby annemr » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:13 am

I am researching Alexander Young and Mary McConnell.

Their son, Alexander Jnr, said they were sugar planters of Jamaica on his marriage certificate in 1859. He was married in Ballarat, Australia. On one of his chidlren's birth certificates, Alexander Jnr said that he was born in Jamaica.

I have located a slave register recording Alexander Young as a slave owner as guardian for Alexander Jnr and Henry McConnell Young.

A previous register shows Alexander Young as a slave.

I have also located Alexander and Henry Young at a boarding school in England in 1841.

So... I would like to be able to confirm any connections between Alexander Jnr (my g-g-grandfather) and his parents and brother.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.I have a lot of information about descendants of Alexander Young in Australia.

If you have not yet checked the registrations in the UK, there is a resource you can use, free, which may help - Google "FreeBMD".
And if you Google the folllowing

"Alexander Young" slave jamaica
(include the quotes)

There are some quite interesting returns there.
Still on Google, try searching their book archive...
I see you are already searching in genesreunited... I found that a wonderful resource.
There are no Alexander (or Henry Young) or Mary McConnell in the Indexes of VL Oliver's "History of Antigua", Hotten's Lists or Hotten's Omitted Chapters, nor in Brandow's "Genealogies of Barbados Families" (the last I checked "just in case!).

Good luck...
