search for Origin of "Willie Gumbs"

Postby gumze » Sat Jun 09, 2007 11:00 am

my paternal grandfather - one Willy Gumbs arrived in Tortola, British
Virgin Islands early 1900 ( approx 1915 or after ); My father was born
1921- ( Sefton Gumbs)- I am seeking information about "Willy Gumbs"
as we have NO conclusive proof of which Island he originated from -
we think Anguilla, but have no proof or evidence - can any one verify
Willy Gumbs' origin country (Island)?

Anguilla Anglican Church Baptismal Records:
Baptized April 3, 1882, William Benjamin son of Mary Ann Gumbs of Long Ground, Anguilla. Her occupation: Labourer. No father given. Baptized by the Rev Henry E Olton.

Anguilla Civil Birth Records:
No. 252. 8 May, 1885. William Alfred, Male. No father given. Mother: Anne Eliza Gumbs. Birth registered by Freeman Hodge, labourer of Valley Division, Anguilla. He signed "X" on 1 June 1885. Registrar: James A Lake.

There are several others.

If you have his mother's name or any other info it would help looking up a Willy/William Gumbs born 1903 or before. Was he married before arriving in Tortola? Do you know his age at death - then we could work backwards?
